Cables lose to Marine in FA Youth
Cup Final
Both clubs senior sides played each other
two nights ago and the score line and
manner of defeat summed up Prescot's
difficulty with the Crosby outfit.
Cables competed well with their taller and
broader opposition, producing slick
movement and passing. They used this to
effect when opening the scoring as Ryan
Cannon shook off his marker to fire past
the Marine keeper at an acute angle. Both
teams no.11's seemed intent on a personal
competition as they carved out chances for their
respective sides. Marine in particular squandered a
number of chances.

Cables had opportunities to seal the game in the
second half. Stevie Stewart did well to control the
ball at an awkward height, although the ball just
evaded the crossbar.

The contest changed in true Cables v Marine fashion
when Prescot keeper Hunter scuffed a goal kick. The
ball fell at the feet of Marine's no.9 who raced
towards the Cables glove-man.
There followed a desperate challenge by Goodwin
who was adjudged to have fouled the Marine
forward in the penalty area. Marine's no.10 (following
in the footsteps of Cumiskey) sent Hunter in the
opposite direction from the resulting spot kick.

Marine took control of the final when, following a
re-bound, no.10's header squeezed into the net
accompanied by keeper Hunter.
Prescot was given a lifeline when Cannon intercepted
a casual pass between Marine defenders. He sped
towards the goal only to be thwarted by an excellent
block by the Marine keeper.
The Crosby outfit was awarded
another penalty. With no.10 already
substituted his penalty kick
replacement ballooned the ball over the
bar. Prescot became energised at this
miss but could not find a killer blow to
take the final into extra time.
