Prescot Cables 1 Warrington Town 2 Tuesday 3 November 2009 |
With the surrounding areas virtually flooded, Hope Street escaped the worse of the deluges to allow this local derby match to occur. With many familiar faces in the Warrington ranks, Prescot could have fielded an Old Boys team. The first 15 minutes belonged to Prescot. They could not, however, convert the chances and was made to pay in the 29th minute when Grogan headed in a rebound from a diving clearance by Riley. Warrington exploited frailties on the Cables left as The Wire found spaces in the Prescot penalty area. Keeper Andy Paxton kept the home side in the game when made an instinctive save with his feet. The ball broke to Evans who scooped the 'leather' over the bar from 4 yards. Prescot continued to struggle in first gear as passes went astray. Evans again had an opportunity to put the game beyond the Tigers when he was allowed to turn in the area. He fired a shot across Paxton's bows that skimmed the upright.Cables lacked cohesion as they pushed forward searching for an equaliser, with Town looking dangerous on the counter attack. Prescot levelled the scores somewhat out of the blue when Aaron Rey collected a loose ball. His left foot shot flew past a static keeper Baker into the net on 76 minutes. With a momentum shift in operation, Prescot decided to play buffet football as a shocking pass straight to a grateful Warrington player enabled him to loft the ball over the defence. Evans latched onto the early Christmas present and fired into the corner of the net in the 81st minute. Cables throw caution to the wind. Calland's attempted chip from 25 yards had enough purchase on it have Baker struggling to tip the ball over the bar. Liptrot's stab from close range was saved at the near post and proved to be Cables' last hurrah. Reporter - P.
