2009 - Celebrating 125 Years of Football History
Continued from front page
The respite didn't last long as Ben Tomlinson took full advantage of slack Cables marking to turn a
well-struck corner past Cables Keeper Zak Jones from 8 yards. With barely ten minutes on the clock the
Nottinghamshire side are running a disjointed looking Cables ragged with some crisp passing and neat
movement inside the Prescot half. It's a full 25 minutes before the home side worry the Worksop defence as
Cables' left back Chris Carney slams a first time drive wide of the Worksop goal following good work from
Ben Parsonage. Five minutes later Parsonage cleverly sets up Cables flanker Steve Williams to roll the ball
a foot wide of the Worksop goal from 15 yard out. Despite the two raids into Worksop's area the
momentum is still with the visitor's as one Worksop cross fizzes across the face of Cables goal and another
cross is headed against the Prescot bar.
Early in the second half it's Worksop's Ben Tomlinson who again causes the danger for Cables. He breaks
free of the home defence to hammer a crisp drive straight at Cables' keeper Zak Jones from 12
yards.Cables' sub Tommy Taylor provides some much needed encouragement for the home fans as he
winds his way through two Worksop challenges before firing a 30 yard effort narrowly wide of a Worksop
post. The visitors appear content enough with their one goal lead to run the clock down with several
substitutions and each set piece taking an age despite the match official urging more haste.Cables bring on
Mukta Mahama to try and inject a bit of urgency into Prescot's attacks and this almost pays off immediately
as Mahama scuffs a loose ball into the arms of the Worksop keeper from 8 yards out. With time running out
Cables throw every player forward for a corner and from the ensuing melee in the Worksop area forward
Tommy Taylor wastefully blasts the ball over the angle of post and crossbar. There is still time for a last
throw of the dice for the home side as they are awarded a free kick 30 yards from goal in added time.
