Chorley FC v Prescot Cables
Tuesday 8th September 2009
Presidents League Cup Match
The Cables faithfull braved a miserable,
drizzly night to support their team in the
Presidents League Cup at a gloomy looking
Victoria Park. Cables started brightly
enough in the dour conditions and their play
is rewarded with a goal on just six minutes.
Joz Mitten ghosts in behind a static Chorley
defence to deftly lift Craig Fluery's cross
high into the Chorley net. Chorley were
looking dangerous but a combination of poor
finishing, good goalkeeping and alert
defending kept the home side at bay during
the rest of the first half.
For the opening 30 minutes of the second
half Cables looked the more likely to score
as Joz Mitten forced a stunning save out of
Chorley Keeper Zak Hibbert with a towering
near post header, ten minutes later another
solid Mitten header is scrambled off the
Chorley line .With Paul Cliff and Craig
Fluery providing the ammunition it only
seems a matter of time before Mitten
increases Cables lead.
Mid way through the second half the
momentum switches to the home side as
Chorley make several substitutions in quick
succession. Once again poor finishing by the
home side fails to punish a couple of lapses in
concentration by the Cables' rearguard. In the
dying stages of the game Cables Keeper Andy
Paxton made a brilliant close range double save
before a Chorley substitute rattles the bar with the
rebound.
After a second half that seemed to last at least an
hour the match official called time on a scrappy
but entertaining game. It's Cables first clean sheet
and first away win of the season against a side
that had lost only one of their seven opening
fixtures.
