2009 - Celebrating 125 Years of Football History
Ashton Town 2 Prescot Cables 1

Liverpool Senior Cup 2nd Round

Tuesday 8 December 2009
Prescot tumbled out of another cup competition early doors to a side
positioned second from bottom of the Vodkat North West Counties
League One.

The Cables following comprised about half of the 64 attendance at
Edge Green Lane. They saw Prescot begin brightly playing down the
slope. A number of chances came and went as some attractive
football was played by the Hope Street outfit.Sadly some weak
marking at a corner allowed Ashton to take a shock lead as Edwards
neatly volleyed into the net on 28 minutes. This galvanised the home
side whilst a certain amount of panic entered the Cables ranks.

With Cooney and Thurston proving a handful for the Ashton defence,
Aaron Rey thought he had levelled the score when from 4 yards from
goal his attempt was somehow blocked by the Ashton keeper.
Minutes later Rey from point blank saw his header strike the keeper
whose body was in the right place at the right time.Ashton had two
other golden chances to increase their lead. To the relief of the
Cables contingent the opportunities passed inches past the uprights.

With most of the supporters still in the clubhouse, Aaron Rey
equalised on 47 minutes. Prescot continued to press forward with
Ashton having their fair share of the action - a performance well above
their current league placing. On 65 minutes, an injured Ashton
keeper managed to collect the ball, at the second attempt, from a
cross. He threw out to one of his colleagues that resulted in Baxby
hitting, from a rebound, the winning goal.

Ashton matched Cables for stamina as they defended their
advantage. Prescot was awarded a number of free kicks - two of
which saw Cables players yellow carded ! The referee did not allow
time for the 5 substitutions as Town progressed to the next round
and a potentially lucrative tie.
