2009 - Celebrating 125 Years of Football History
Garforth Town 0 Prescot Cables 5
Tuesday 9 March 2010
A remarkable score line following the recent spate of misfortune, dismissals and a record of no win in seven matches. In addition,
Garforth had won 3-1 at Skelmersdale at the weekend (they also won 3-0 at Lancaster). As tonight's match unfolded their Mr Hyde
persona re-appeared in front of a lowly 82 spectators.
It was a shock to your correspondent that Town relied so much on the offside rule that they had no other alternative when this broke
down. In the first 10 minutes, the assistant was a mobile semaphore signal as his flag was raised on many occasions.
When Cables found a way to avoid the defensive line they punished the home side. On 20 minutes Jamie McCulloch burst through.
He managed to shrug off a defender but was taken down by keeper Morgan and a penalty was awarded. The referee was lenient on
the Garforth shot stopper as a yellow card was shown. This was in contrast to similar incidents last week when two Prescot
keepers were red carded. Karl Brown easily converted.
Phil Cooney was next to escape the offside trap as he forced a corner. From which the crossbar was rattled.
Prescot increased their lead on the half hour as Rey found Couch in space. His cross found Williams who shot on the turn. The ball
was deflected to McCulloch who defeated Morgan.
Any potential Garforth comeback was erased in the 48th minute when Brown's superb inswinging corner found Spearitt who
decisively headed the ball home.
Cables fourth goal was a repeat of the third as Brown and Spearitt combined in the 64th minute.
Andy Paxton was in danger of becoming a spectator as he practised his kicking.
A spate of substitutions followed and it was McGann who evaded the offside to run unopposed on keeper Morgan. The Prescot
striker hesitated and the Town glove man managed to save with this legs.
Another substitute Ojapha opened his Cables account with a solo effort. Put through past the offside line, he teased the Garforth
defence and keeper before calmly finding the corner of the net on 88 minutes.
In stoppage time McCulloch missed a glorious chance to round off the evening as the Garforth ranks were splintered.
Man of the Match : Quite a few candidates. A joint award was decided on as Karl Brown, his best game by far,
controlled proceedings and Tom Spearitt, a revelation in centre defence and two goals, nudged their way to the top of
the list.
