Cables first threat was carved out by Karl Connolly's deft through ball to Steve Williams on the half hour.Williams just loses out in a race for the ball with the onrushing Witton Keeper and Witton defender Brian Pritchard. Witton return straight upfield and a sweet interchange of passes ends with a Witton forward skimming the Cables post with a 25 yard drive.

5 minutes before the break Cables James Croxton finds space out wide before carrying the ball to the edge of the Witton area. With his path blocked Croxton rolls the ball to Paul Hopkins who fires an 18 yard effort over the angle of post and crossbar. In first half added time Cables have a real let off as Witton's Brian Pritchard rises unchallenged to head a corner back across the Cables goal and inches wide of the far post.

Cables start the second half brightly and come close to taking the lead in the space of three minutes.Striker Paul Hopkins grazes a Witton upright with a fierce 25 yard free kick and three minutes later Hopkins goes closer still as his dipping 20 yard drive is turned over the bar by the Witton Keeper.

From the resulting corner Cables Karl Bell sends a firm header straight at the Witton Keeper.
Cables are almost made to pay for not converting their chances on the hour as a Witton header crashes off the Cables bar and Cables Keeper Andy Paxton makes a stunning save from a swerving long range Witton effort.

5 minutes later Paxton produces an identical save to turn another Witton effort over the bar and the resulting corner is cleared following a scramble inside the Cables six yard area. The game appears to turn Cables away when a Witton defender is given his marching orders for a second yellow card and a flurry of Cables pressure pushes the home side back inside their own half. Cables Steve Williams drifts in from the right before hammering an 18 yard drive straight at the Witton Keeper and two Cables corners are cleared by the home defence..

With the clock ticking down Cables have an astonishing let off as a Witton substitute heads wide of a gaping Cables goal with Prescot Keeper Andy Paxton stranded. The home side lay siege to the Cables goal for the three minutes of added time but fail to find a way through the massed visiting defence.Cables' Keeper Andy Paxton was rightly given Cables' man of the match by the match sponsors.
