PRESCOT CABLES FOOTBALL CLUB

Despite the setback Cables continue to press and a
neat move involving Steve Williams and Jamie
McCulloch almost sends striker Darren Byers clean
through on goal. On 18 minutes Jamie McCulloch
pulls Cables level with a contender for goal of the
season as his 25 yard thunderbolt almost breaks the
Lairds' net. Buoyed by the equaliser Cables surge
forward in search of more goals. A sweeping move
involving Steve Williams,James Croxton and Darren
Byers results in Cables' Rob Deakin firing a long
range drive inches over the Cables bar. The busy
James Croxton causes more mayhem in the Lairds'
area as he dummies one visiting defender but is
tackled as he is about to shoot for goal.
As half time approaches it seems only a matter of
time before Cables get their noses in front. Striker
Darren Byers just loses out in a race for a through
ball as the Lairds' keeper is forced to rush from his
area to clear. With time almost up another defensive
mistake allows Lairds' to snatch a surprise lead.
Cables' Karl Bell misjudges the flight of a Lairds'
goal kick and Lairds' Alex Hay is left free to send a
scorching half volley past Cables Keeper Andy
Paxton from 16 yards.
Before Cables have a chance to launch a second
half fight back Lairds' snatch a third goal on 48
minutes.
Alex Hay collects a throw from the left and turns his
Cables marker before hammering a angled drive at
Keeper Andy Paxton from 10 yards. Paxton gets
fingertips to the ball but can't stop it bouncing into the
net. In the process Paxton is injured and has to be
replaced by central defender Lee Owens between the
sticks.
Cables rally and in the space of 10 minutes James
Croxton, Jamie McCulloch and Steve Williams all go
close to reducing the deficit. On 72 minutes Lairds'
Alex Hay completes his hat trick with a cross shot that
deceives stand-in Keeper Lee Owen and finds the far
corner of the net. To their credit Cables continue to
press as Darren Byers has an effort superbly tipped
over by the Lairds' Keeper. From the resulting corner
Byers can't convert from three yards as the ball skims
off his head and behind for a goal kick. Cables'
Cameron Dalton goes even closer a minute later as his
near post shot beats the Lairds' Keeper but is cleared
off the line.
There is still time for some late drama as stand in
Cables' Keeper Lee Owens saves a late penalty by
Lairds Adamson.
