2009 - Celebrating 125 Years of Football History
The Unibond League finally came to life after its long slumber
with a First Division North derby match at chilly Stormy Corner.

With Prescot deciding on a 4:5:1 format, the home side were
able to dictate play moving the ball well across the park. They
able to capitalise in the 14th minute when the ball was quickly
centred into the Cables area where Ledsham beat everyone to
bullet a header into the corner of the net.

United increased their lead on 22 minutes when a corner was
whipped into the box. The ball re-bounded off White and had
enough momentum to beat the outstretched hands of Paxton.
Phil Cooney, who was by now playing as a second striker,
almost halved the deficit by flicking over the ball over the bar
following a driven free kick by Wright.

Dean Thurston, a skilful workhorse in the set up, took
advantage of a Skelmersdale mistake. His shot found the only
body between him and goal in the shape of keeper Eastham.
Just before the interval Paxton kept Cables in the game when
he tipped over a powerful free kick attempt.

Reverting to two attacking players up front, Prescot dominated
most of the second period. Cooney, Thurston, Cliff and Lundon
were all involved in promising moments that just lacked that
cutting edge.

Skelmersdale was still a threat on the break, although stifled by
the Prescot resurgence. From a corner Cables was fortunate to
see the ball deflected off the crossbar as the second half
remained scoreless.
