2009 - Celebrating 125 Years of Football History
Prescot Cables 3 Wakefield 1

Saturday 20 March 2010

An early shock for Cables as Wakefield took the lead inside 2 minutes as Denton headed the ball beyond Paxton via the post.
Moments later the visitors wasted a glorious chance to increase their lead and this proved costly.
The visitors showed an intention to use their height and weight advantage.
Cables gradually found their feet when a neat flick on by McCulloch allowed Rey to turn and hit a shot that deflected off his
striking partner McGann.
A mistake in the Wakfield ranks culminated in a controlled strike by Couch that brought keeper Zolna into action.
On 35 minutes Karl Brown exploited acres of space as he passed the ball through keeper Zolna.
Just before the interval John Couch's diving header from a McGann centre took Prescot into the lead.

Prescot rode their luck in the second period as a Wakefield free kick saw Paxton save down to his right. From the loose ball the
visitors hit the woodwork from close range.
However it was Cables that increased their lead on 58 minutes due to Rey's persistence as Couch was upended by Ferguson.
Brown comfortably scored the penalty.
Karl Brown almost completed his hat trick as he blazed a free kick over the bar.
Keeper Zolna went forward to add weight to the Wakefield attack only to find the ball cleared to Brown. The Wakefield keeper
seemed in slow motion as he laboured back to his own half. Craig Laight was forced to use his arm to block Brown's goal bound
attempt. Much to the disgust of the Wakefield player he was red carded.
