PRESCOT CABLES 0 TRAFFORD FC 1
CABLES FAIL TO SPARK!
Prescot Cables five match unbeaten run came to an end with a disappointing home defeat to Trafford FC in a scrappy
disjointed affair. On a night which saw 51 goals scored in the nine Evo-stik Division one North games only one of those
came at Valerie Park and the fans could be forgiven for feeling somewhat short changed.
Whilst there was a lot of industry and honest endeavour on display from Cables there was little in the way of ingenuity
and creativity and the end product was sadly lacking.Dave Ridler made three changes from the team that faced Fylde
last Saturday. Tony Davies, James Thomas and Jack Booth coming in for Michael Grogan, Joe Gibiliru and Chris
Rowntree.
The first opportunity of the evening fell to Trafford's Michael Oates after three minutes who rattled the underside of the
bar on the right side of the penalty area from an acute angle. Two minutes later Cables retaliated with James Thomas
hitting the side netting.
On eleven minutes Pearson fed Couch whose effort was saved by Trafford keeper Robertson for a corner. After 18
minutes Jack Booth hit the underside of the bar from the left side of the penalty area. On 24 minutes a fine tackle from
Tony Davies denied Trafford a scoring opportunity. On 26 minutes Trafford were gifted an opportunity when Stephen
Longrigg was dispossessed by Michel Oates who played the ball back to Liam Murray who fired over the bar. On 36
minutes an effort from 25 yards by Trafford's Joe Shaw sailed over the bar and a minute later Booth fed Pearson who
shot narrowly wide for Cables.
A minute before the break Trafford made the breakthrough when Lee Roberts upended Warren Collier in the box.
Stephen Longrigg saved well from Oate's penalty but the Trafford striker scored from the rebound. After the break
Stephen Longrigg produced a fine save to deny Trafford a second goal. Two minutes later and Trafford's Melford Knight
was dismissed fro a two footed challenge. With Trafford reduced to ten men and 40 minutes left to play the advantage
now seemed to rest with Cables but they failed to make this count as the game degenerated into a high ball lottery with
the solid and well organised Trafford defence coming out on top.
Indeed it was Trafford who almost increased their lead with Murray shooting wide on 57 minutes and a minute later
Smart hitting the bar with a free kick.
Dave Ridler rang the changes replacing Thomas, Cooney and Booth with Ruane, Thames and James but all to no avail
as Trafford hung on to grab the points. On 75 minutes Oates hit the post for Trafford and John Couch and Steven
Thames went close for Cables.
