PRESCOT CABLES FOOTBALL CLUB
A Community Interest Football Club founded 1884
Frickley Athletic is a small club with a
small ground……not dissimilar to
Cables’ own ground at Hope Street. The
club house is a tad small and the Cables’
early arrivals were hard pressed to find
seating while they quaffed their refreshing
beverages. Suitably refreshed the
travelling faithful took up their usual
position behind the opposition goal.
The game started brightly enough with
Cables playing the positive football
although early forays into the Frickley half
brought no joy and didn’t overly trouble
the Frickley keeper.
A free kick on the edge of the box late in the first
half had the Cables fans shouting for Lee Owens to
come upfield and try to repeat his headed goal for
the Reserve team on Thursday, however Lee
remained one of the two defenders marking
Frickley’s attackers and the set piece, although
attacked credibly by Cables went begging.
After half time the Frickley players emerged into the
sunshine looking more positive and for most of the
second half the play was in the Cables half of the
pitch. Andy Paxton was immense in goal for Cables
and valiantly handled everything Frickley
threw at him.
Frickley broke the deadlock on 64
minutes when following a bit of head
tennis around the Cables goalmouth the
experienced Lee Morris brought the ball
down and slotted it past Andy Paxton.
The second Frickley goal came on the
66th minute as they punished a Cables
error and again Lee Morris found the
back of the net.
Cables had a penalty shout when Darren Byers was
brought down courtesy of a Frickley defender who
seemed to want to swap shirts early. The Ref waived
the appeal away despite protests and the game
continued.
Allan Collins making his first start for Cables showed
real promise, his jinking runs on the right wing caused
the Frickley defenders more than a little trouble, but
Cables failed to find the finishing touch. Both Byers
and Green had goal scoring opportunities.
