Ilkeston manage to gain a foothold in the game as a
left wing cross is headed over the Cables bar from 8
yards out.
With Cables looking comfortable disaster strikes on
26 minutes as the Cables defence get in a muddle
near the left corner flag and an Ilkeston player gains
possession. The resulting low cross into Cables six
yard area is turned into the Cables' goal by Prescot
defender Rob McIntosh's attempt to clear the
danger.Cables return straight upfield in search of a
quick reply.First Jamie McCulloch then Mukta
Mahama have efforts blocked inside the Ilkeston
area. On the stroke of half time Cables have a slice of
good fortune as the match official rules out an
Ilkeston 'goal' for a marginal offside decision.
The second half starts with the home side coming
more into the game as Cables' defence is forced to
cope with a succession of corners and raids down the
left. Cables' young right back Cameron Dalton
manages to smother the threat out wide as centre
backs Lee Owens and Rob MIntosh nullify the
Ilkeston threat in the air.
On the hour Liam Kennedy's flick on sets up Steve
Williams for a run at the Ilkeston goal but a
scrambling defence forces the Cables player wide
and the chance is gone.Another error sets up
Ilkeston for their second goal as Ilkeston's Steven
Istead dispossesses a Cables defender and runs
through clean on goal before sliding the ball under
Cables' keeper Andy Paxton for the home side's
second. It's harsh on a spirited Cables and the goal
breathes confidence into the home side. Cables'
substitute Tommy Taylor gets on the end of a
through ball and lifts the ball over the keeper and
narrowly over the bar before being called back for a
narrow offside decision. With time up another
defensive lapse gifts the home side a goal as Cables
fail to clear a simple ball inside their own area
allowing Ilkeston's Jon Douglas to tap home from
close range.Cables have a last gasp flourish winning
two corners before striker Liam Kennedy fires a 25
yard half volley straight at the Ilkeston keeper.
Another league defeat but plenty of commitment and
grit from a weakened Cables side against the
Unibond Premier League's in-form team.
