St Helens Town rise to the occasion
Tuesday 29th July 2009

Cables' new look side suffered a disappointing reverse against
a lively St Helens Town team on Tuesday night.Town seemed
to adapt to the wet conditions much better and were ahead as
early as the second minute.A defensive howler allowed
Town's Mike Scully to stroll past Cables Keeper Andy
Paxton before rolling the ball into the net.The early set back
appeared to knock the stuffing out of Cables as St Helens
dominated the first half.Mitchell hammered a shot just over the
Cables, bar before Karl Ledsham raced clear of a hesitant
Cables defence to score Town's second.Cables only first half
threat came courtesy of a 20 yard effort by Kevin Poole that
warmed the hands of the Town keeper.

At half time Cables made several changes and started to make
inroads into the St Helens half. Striker Jacob Baptista beat the
Town Keeper in a race to the ball but only managed to
lift his shot into the side netting. Despite the improvement
from the home side Town still manage to carve out and
miss chances at regular intervals. Two efforts fly narrowly
wide of the Cables goal before an unmarked St Helens
forward sends a free header over the Cables bar from six
yards. The reprieve doesn't last long as another defensive
clanger by the home side is punished by Town's Graeme
Mitchell.

5 minutes from time Cables Striker Josh Mitten displays
neat close control to bring down a high ball before side
stepping a defender and slamming a low drive into the St
Helens goal. It's Cables first pre-season goal of the
season and despite some late pressure the home side fail
to add to their tally.

As you can imagine - the St Helens Town
brigade have made an awful lot more out of
the occasion. You could be forgiven for
thinking that they had won the FA Cup final -
such is the esteem associated with beating
Cables.

A gloating match report is available here if
you can bring yourself to read it.
