A precise through ball releases Marine's Karl
O'Donnell inside the Cables area to fire an angled
drive at Cables' Keeper Andy Paxton.Paxton gets a
hand to the ball but only succeeds in diverting the ball
along his goal line.Following a mass scramble
Marine's Peter Cumiskey turns the ball into the goal
amid Cables' appeals for a foul on the
Keeper.Despite this set back Cables are level within
three minutes as right back Lee Smith thunders a
spectacular 30 yard dive into the Marine net for his
first goal of the season. On the stroke of half time
Cables Keeper Andy Paxton produces another
excellent save as he pushes away a curling 25 yard
free kick from Marine's left back.
Cables start the second half full of energy and
purpose,A sweet move sees Smith link up with
Croxton and Green before Steve Williams slams an
effort a yard wide of the Marine goal from just inside
the penalry area. Two minutes later Cables' James
Croxton picks up a loose ball before scampering into
the Marine area and having a fierce effort deflected
behind for a Cables' corner. Cables Keeper Andy
Paxton is called into action again on 60 minutes as he
dives full length to push away an effort by Marine's
Karl O'Donnell.
On 65 minutes another Cables raid is cleared by the
Marine defence as far as Cables Eddie Taylor 30
yards from goal.Taylor waits for the ball to bounce
before rasping a half volley straight at the Marine
Keeper.A flurry of substitutions arrive to try and
provide fresh legs to break the stalemate. The two
sides exchange chances as Marine's Shuan tuck is
clean through on goal but fires wastefully wide.At the
other end Cables' Rob McIntosh sends the ball over
the Marine bar from Liam Kennedy's knock down.
With time virtually up Marine apply the classic
sucker punch. A Marine substitute is allowed to run
through three Cables players before
stepping across Cables' Captain
Karl Bell to win a free kick on the
edge of the Cables' area.The
resulting free kick is floated in for
Marine's Tony Davies to rise
unchallenged and send a downward
header beyond Cables Keeper Andy
Paxton and into the Cables goal.5
seconds after the restart the match
official blows for full time. It's
another harsh lesson for Cables on
the price of missed chances and lack
of concentration at the back.
