2009 - Celebrating 125 Years of Football History

After the intial bombardment by Harrogate Cables
began to settle down and get a few good crosses from
Cooney on the right wing.
After about 18 minutes Joey Gibiliru jnr took a knock
which he didnt recover from and was substituted by
Paul Cliff. I didnt hear the announcer repeat his earlier
efforts to pronounce Gibiliru as I think he gave up after
the failed first attempt.
At 24 minutes a crossed ball saw Rey challenge the
goalie - the ball dropped for Phil Cooney who smashed
it in. The ball bouncing from the boards behind the goal
gave the impression that he had missed. Happily it
was just an illusion.
After a couple more efforts on goal by Cables we
reached half time with Cables going in 1 goal up. Fairly
decent grub was on sale at the snack bar. Cables fans
talked about the lead and hoped we would continue to
push on instead of tryng to defend a lead - a mistake
that has cost us dearly in the past
In the second half Paul Cliff certainly came into his
own making a number of searching runs down the left
wing. At 55 minutes Mark Calland and one of their
defenders jumped for a high ball, Calland reacted first
to the loose ball and stabbed the ball over the line from
eight yards. The ball was bouncing around in the goal
mouth confusion and it was difficult to see who had
scored at first until Calland emerged with his arms
held high.
Shortly after a through ball to Connell in the Harrogate
box was simply begging to be put away. Somehow
Darren managed to miss a really good chance. He
was so frustrated with himself that he kicked the ball
away in anger and got booked for his troubles.
