2009 - Celebrating 125 Years of Football History
Gibiliru - The Gaffer (cont)

Joey was proud of the fact that prior to Christmas the
training sessions had been going very well due in part to
the discipline enforced about attendance. However he
was annoyed that it had proved difficult during the bad
weather to maintain momentum with no games and
disruption to the training schedule.
Gibiliru's first game in charge was a baptism of fire, an
away fixture to promotion hopefuls Lancaster which
resulted in a heavy defeat. When asked how that affects
confidence he was quick to respond, "the game was
frustrating, losing through a number of general team
mistakes that caused the goals, but either way I had to
pick a team upon which to build. Whilst it wasn't the
start I'd hoped for you have to put it behind you and
move onwards and upwards".
As the squad has developed a number of players who
were given a chance have now left the Team. Joey
pointed out that it does not always work out, prime
examples being Ian Callaghan and Karl Carney who he
liked as players and hoped that they would do much
better in the team but it was not to be. In this league
prolific goal scorers, or 'Foxes in the Boxes', as Joey
calls them, are extremely hard to come by. A player that
Joe admires as a striker left Cables at the end of last
season and he openly admits that he, " would have liked
Darren Byers to have stayed from last seasons squad but
unfortunately he left for Burscough. But I would have to
say that a number of younger players in our squad, you
can clearly see, have the potential to do well at this level
and then progress further".
So, when asked how he thought the first half of the
season had gone, Joe with a slight edge of satisfaction
stated, " I am comfortable with the first half of the
season, we are in a decent position in the league although
I would have liked to have still been involved in a cup
competition. Games that stand out for us were the
Halifax and Skelmersdale fixtures as we weren't really
expected to win. On the other side I feel we really
should have won games at both Atherton and Ashton."
Having spoken to Joes partner Cath, it would appear
that the Gibiliru household has an atmosphere that can be
cut with a knife following a Cables defeat. So what is
Joey's take on how he deals with losing? "When the
team performs badly and we lose, it would be true to say
I am not a happy person. When we lose I talk to the
players about the game and refer back to previous
games when we have played differently and that has
produced a positive result. I will always listen to players
and would be the first to take any positives out of
suggestions, but if I don't agree I tell them straight".
Cables have presently earned 29 points out of a possible
66 in 22 games. When looking at the Unibond Premier
League, Hucknall Town have achieved 33 points out of
the same number of games. Hucknall town are in the
play-off zone. Cables are 9th.
